What Is This For?
This is a thermal imaging camera. Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services uses these primarily to locate victims in a fire. This device is also very useful for helping the firefighters to see in a smoke-filled room, which allows them to find victims, locate the fire and find hidden fire.
By looking through this imaging device the firefighter can see through smoke or darkness. The camera display is remarkably clear as some of the photographs below show.
This is an example of what the firefighter sees while looking through the device. Notice the children crouched down in the smoke-filled room. Before this technology was available our firefighters would have to locate victims by performing a systematic physical search of the dwelling. As you can see, this device allows us to go straight to the victims and begin rescue operations.
The thermal imaging camera also allows firefighters to see at night. Notice the man carrying the child in the picture on the right. This allows us to better search for missing persons at night.
The thermal imaging cameras that we use have made a dramatic change in the speed and effectiveness of some of our difficult tasks.
